Funding at Critical Shortage for Meals On Wheels, Inc. of Tarrant County

Meals On Wheels, Inc. of Tarrant County needs help meeting the growing need for home- delivered meals. The agency, funded by government grants and local community donations, has experienced a $401,000 reduction in government grant funding since 2011. These reductions are based on state and federal budget reductions allocated to the Texas Department of Aging and Disability Services, the Texas Department of Agriculture, and the local Area Agency on Aging that allocate funding to programs like Meals On Wheels.

During this period of reduced funding, Meals On Wheels, Inc. of Tarrant County has continued to serve clients with the greatest need and has maintained its policy of not placing people who need meals on a waiting list for service. This agency provides almost 1 million meals annually and more than 20,000 home visits by professional case workers, registered dietitians, and other staff in addition to daily visits by volunteers who deliver 4,000 meals each Monday through Friday.

Executive Director Carla Jutson states, “The agency is reaching out to the community for additional support to cover lost government funding. At the current rate of income versus expenses for meals, we are projecting a shortfall of $125,000 by September 30 and desperately need additional cash donations now to continue serving all of our Tarrant County neighbors who are unable to prepare a meal for themselves and do not have a reliable source of help. This basic need is critical to enabling people to remain at home and avoid premature institutionalization in hospitals or nursing homes.”

If you can help by funding meals for a week, a year, or a month for one or more homebound people living in Tarrant County, please send your donation now. Each meal costs $5.50 to prepare and deliver. Your gift of $27.50 for one week, $110 for one month, or $1,430 for one year or any amount is greatly appreciated.

Meals On Wheels, Inc. of Tarrant County is a local nonprofit agency dedicated to providing fresh, nutritious, ready-to-eat meals and other services to homebound residents of the county who are unable to prepare meals for themselves and have no one to help them on a regular basis. Meals are prepared in the agency’s central kitchen to ensure the highest quality food at the lowest cost. The services allow our elderly, disabled, and chronically ill neighbors to remain living at home for as long as possible, maintaining their independence and dignity.
