Meals logo 286 and 401Did you know that Meals On Wheels, Inc. of Tarrant County was founded in the faith-based community? It all started in 1973 as a collaboration between 11 faith-based organizations in downtown Fort Worth to bring food to the elderly in the central city area. From the 25 meals that were served that very first week to what has become a county-wide effort that now provides nearly 1 million meals each year to homebound elderly and disabled residents of Tarrant County, we have never lost sight of our roots in the faith-based community.

On Sunday, May 15th, we are asking our friends in the faith-based community to once again join us in the fight against senior hunger by participating in Pass the Plate 2016.

shutterstock_171190637-newIf you are a member of a local church or synagogue, we are asking that you speak to the leaders of your congregation and encourage them to participate in Pass the Plate 2016 by taking up a special offering or making a donation to provide home-delivered meals to the homebound elderly and disabled residents of Tarrant County. This is also a great project for adult Sunday school classes or weekly study groups. Your gift, large or small, will make a meaningful difference to someone in need right here in Tarrant County.

Although we take advantage of government funding sources for a portion of our budget, we are not a government agency. We rely on community support to raise about half of our $6.5 million annual budget.  Without the support of caring individuals, faith-based organizations, and other civic groups, we could not provide nearly 1 million nutritious meals each year to those in need.

With your help, we are focused on feeding those who can no longer prepare nutritious meals for themselves. If you are aware of anyone in your congregation who could benefit from home-delivered meals, please refer them to us. There are no age or income restrictions. To qualify, recipients must be homebound for any length of time, be physically or mentally unable to prepare nutritious meals for themselves, and have no one to help them on a regular basis. To refer a client, click here. One of our professional case managers will contact the potential client within 48 hours, Monday through Friday, for an in-home assessment of their needs. Meals usually begin within 3-5 days of the initial call.

volunteer delivers mealOur meals are delivered by caring volunteers. These individuals do more than just provide a meal and a friendly home visit. They are trained to contact our office if someone does not answer the door. This gives many of our clients and their families an added peace of mind. We are always in need of additional volunteers to deliver meals.  You can also encourage your congregation to give back to the community in this very rewarding way.  To volunteer, click here.
